Food Security In African Countries And The Need To Develop Local Production

2021-01-01

In many African countries, food security is a challenge for governments and their populations. Despite access to farmable land, many of these countries are heavily reliant on imported food products to sustain the dietary needs for their population.

As a result, governments, such as in Kenya, are looking at policies and initiatives that can increase yields of existing crops and aid the introduction of new crops. The aim being to lessen the reliance on imported foods, ensure the welfare of the population and improve food security.

The local agricultural sector will play a large part in this. The increased use of fertilizers, which are applied at very low levels in many African countries, due to lack of supply and imported costs.

Policies may include encouraging the growth of local fertilizer production facilities, with an emphasis on sustainable and environmentally friendly organic fertilizers, using locally sourced raw materials.
